Why Zions and why banking?
Management is extremely supportive of growth. During my time at the bank, I have held roles in information security, data analytics, and technology. In fact, I’ve averaged a new role about every 18 months. This career growth is only possible because of my mentors at the bank. I have had the best mentors and managers who have guided my career journey. They saw aptitude and potential in me! I have seen how they actively work with team members to grow and gain a well-balanced background.
Our desire to continuously innovate keeps me here at the bank. I tell people that banking is the coolest job in technology because banks must continually invest in technology to help protect and grow customer wealth.
I tell people that Zions Bancorporation is more than just a bank; we are a technology company. What are Zions’ top technology priorities?
Our vision at Zions is realized through technology. There are two driving questions about technology for the next few years at Zions: How do we utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning to further bank objectives, and what is real in terms of actual benefit of AI/ML?
Our leaders at the bank are incredibly supportive of AI/ML realization, but as we move forward in adopting AI/ML, we are focusing on cost optimization, revenue growth, governance and risk management. Generative AI has tremendous potential to drive productivity, and machine learning can help us mitigate risk. These priorities will help keep us competitive and profitable in an ever-evolving landscape.
You have a lot on your plate! With so much going on, how do you stay focused on your goals?
We take time to plan objectives and results at the beginning of the year to have a clear roadmap but recognize that fluidity and flexibility are key. We focus on what will add the most value to the bank and our customers. It’s important to measure how we meet our goals and objectives throughout the year.
What lessons have you learned during your time at the bank?
The technology and economic landscape continually change. Adaptation is key. During my time at the bank, I’ve held so many roles, and I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter what you know; what matters is your aptitude and attitude. Seek out mentors and partners. They will guide and work with you on the possibilities ahead.
