In 2018, Blackfoot natives Kaden and Julie Bench launched an online boutique named KJ's Dresses and Ties to compete in Utah State University's start-up competition. With only $100, they purchased two dresses and five styles of ties and launched a website, ultimately finishing in the top 10 finalists among dozens of entrepreneurs.
After moving back to their hometown of Blackfoot, Idaho, they rebranded as Tilden Co. with a focus on women’s clothing and opened their first brick-and-mortar location in 2021.
Julie Bench shares insight from her entrepreneurial journey and offers advice on standing out in a crowded marketplace.

What do you want people to know about your small business?
“At Tilden Co., we aim to be more than just a clothing store — we want to be your personal cheerleader. We build friendships with everyone who walks through our doors and strive to make our customers feel confident and empowered.”
“We organize monthly activities and events at our store, such as girl nights featuring small business owners, embroidery classes and paint nights to create a space for self-care and connection.”
“Our store is a place where you won’t be judged but will be celebrated and supported. We love getting to know our customers and supporting other small businesses.”
What inspired you to create a clothing boutique specifically for women?
“Our company started out quite differently. My husband and I initially designed clothes, focusing on matching dresses and ties for couples. However, when COVID drastically affected our business, it became difficult to sell ties.”
“We then pivoted to growing our women's clothing line. My background is in consumer sciences, which includes entrepreneurship and fabric construction. Through this, I learned a lot about women’s fashion, and it positioned us to grow this side of our business. This transition allowed us to focus on what we love and excel in, creating a boutique that celebrates and supports women.”
How do your products stand out in a crowded market?
“We stand out through our ability to curate and present complete outfits. While we don't manufacture our own styles yet, we carefully select pieces from wholesalers and put together cohesive, stylish outfits for our customers.”
“Our brand is also more than just clothing — it's a community. We focus on selling who we are, our exceptional customer service, and the genuine support and love we offer our customers.”
“Finally, authenticity is key. We show who we are and build real connections with people. As a mom, I share real-life mom moments, even if they're imperfect, to connect with my audience on a personal level.”
What advice do you have for other small business owners?
“Find a community and remember that community trumps competition. We don't need to be afraid of someone doing the same thing as us. Instead, we can work together and foster a supportive community that allows all of us to thrive.”
“It’s also critical to understand your ideal customer profile. Because we understand our customers and what resonates with them, it’s easier to create a brand that stands out in the market.”
Why did you choose to work with Zions Bank and how has it helped your small business?
“We chose to work with Zions Bank because of the incredible support we received from its Blackfoot Branch manager, who met with us and immediately embraced the idea of helping us grow our company. We leased a spot from Zions Bank in Blackfoot for the first nine months and worked closely with the branch manager during that time.”
“We continue to choose Zions Bank because they have been some of our biggest supporters. They have consistently shown their dedication to our success, making them an invaluable resource in our business journey.”
