Although many people associate Idaho with its world-famous potatoes, Idaho is also called the Gem State for good reason. Idaho produces more than 72 types of gemstones and is one of only two places where Star Garnets can be found in significant quantities.

Jessica and Charlie Herner, both graduates of the Gemological Institute of America, are keenly aware of Idaho’s legacy in precious gems. They recently purchased jewelry store Jensen Stern, which has operated in Ketchum, Idaho, for the past 35 years.

The Herners share insights on their profession and journey as small business owners.

What do you want people to know about your small business?

Jessica is a certified gemologist, while Charlie has a background in architectural design and computer aided design (CAD). We have provided jewelry design and illustration services to worldwide clients over the last decade and have received international awards as fine jewelry designers.

We also provide personalized consultation to help clients transform inherited gemstones into modern, wearable art. By understanding each client’s unique story and vision, we ensure that each redesign honors the original sentiment while creating something new and beautiful. This process preserves the legacy of the gemstones and allows clients to carry a piece of their family history with them in a fresh, meaningful way.

What do you enjoy about working in the jewelry industry?

Over the last few years, we’ve worked out of a home office to offer design, evaluation, illustration and gem acquisition services. To expand our footprint, we used a U.S. Small Business Administration 7(a) loan to purchase Jensen Stern when the owners retired.

We grew up in Hailey and knew the owner’s daughter, and we recognized Jensen Stern’s strong brand and reputation as a high-quality jewelry store. We intend to uphold its legacy and provide services for repair work, gemstone acquisition, customized creations and redesign work.

How does your small business stay competitive in your local market?

Jensen Stern’s brand goes beyond being a jewelry store. We position our store as an active social hub and gallery that invites our guests to relax and appreciate fine art.

Our art gallery displays jewelry from both established and upcoming new artists. Jensen Stern was the first store in the country to show Sevan Biçaçki jewelry, which is now featured in museums, and to carry Stephen Webster designs before his work became well known.
