This is particularly true for Body Basics, a personal training studio owned and operated by James and Christine Kling. Christine overcame challenges from a thyroid disorder and adrenal fatigue, and now leverages her experience to help others with autoimmune disorders.

What do you want people to know about your small business?

“We provide a boutique training experience and specialize in functional movement training that improves strength, balance and flexibility. This approach helps our clients perform daily activities more efficiently and reduces the risk of injury. As part of our onboarding process, new clients complete a comprehensive screening and are assigned a trainer who can best meet their individual needs.”
 
“We also prioritize a non-intimidating, fun fitness culture with private and semi-private personal training, remote training and health coaching. It’s important for us to help clients achieve their fitness goals in a supportive and caring environment.” 

What factors helped your small business succeed? 

“The number one thing that has helped our business is maintaining a people-oriented mindset. We, as business owners, are operating to make a positive difference in our community, so we are more interested in human interactions than business transactions.”

“We love having the opportunity to provide employees with meaningful careers as personal trainers, and we absolutely love helping our clients improve their health and fitness, which in turn allows them to have a greater impact in their communities and in their families.”

“To help our community, we support local nonprofit organizations through direct contributions and by providing donations for silent auctions. We’re proud to have supported the Idaho Youth Ranch, the St. Alphonsus Festival of Trees and Faces of Hope. James serves on the board of directors for CATCH Idaho and 100 Men for Good.”

What advice do you have for other small business owners?

“One of the best pieces of advice we received and still use is to hire professionals in areas where we lack expertise. Trying to do everything yourself to save money can lead to challenges. Entrepreneurs often think they can learn a skill or fix an issue, but this can cause problems later. I advise small business owners to build relationships with a good bank, CPA, law firm, and other professionals. They have specialized skills, just as you do, and their expertise is valuable.”

“Creating our mission statement and sticking to it has also been very helpful. We encourage every business to find their mission and stick with it, and we encourage all businesses to help others.”
